It was great to get out in the field again but it was difficult to ID birds. ended up with three eclipse mallards, a shoveler (Monte we already ate it) and a BW teal. Took until about 10 AM. We all limited (4 of us) it was a mixed bag of mallards gads shovelers and teal. Had some honkers come in to the spread doing touch and goes, that was pretty cool, to far out to get a shot.
Mud, mud, and more mud took an hour to clean my boots ;D we walked in instead of driving. Haven't talked to my son to see how they did up in Rolla/Rock Lake

Justin and I went out to Horsehead to try for crames. Saw very few. There was a good feed of mallards off the north end of Horsehead. We went to the Pettibone/Woodworth area and ended up with a nice pass shooting area. We got 3 gadwalls, 2 mallards and a blue-winged teal. Justin also shot his first sharptail. All-in-all, we had a good time. Stopped by the cafe in Cleveland. The knefla (sp?) soup was excellent as were the hamburgers. I can heartily recommend that as a place to get lunch!
ps: We also got three giant canadas.

It was a fun but difficult opener. Dean, Alex, myself and Simon setup for a relaxing afternoon mallard slough hunt. I brought Seymour along, now 8 months, to see if he could retrieve for us in an actual hunting situation. ID was near impossible. Our first six birds were drake mallards, we were feeling pretty good. But then we started to mis-identify and the next three were hens. At that point we decided to quit hunting and pickup, no more room for mistakes. All in all had a great time, enjoyed spending the opener with Dean and Alex, and especially Simon and Seymour.
